MUW Department of Community Living to host annual Campus Safety Day
COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Mississippi University for Women Department of Community Living will host its second annual Campus Safety Day on Tuesday, Sept. 28.
This event will take place in the parking lot next to Hogarth Dining Center and will last from 4:30 p.m. until 6 p.m.
September is campus fire safety month for colleges and universities across the country, according to Sirena Parker, MUW director of Community living.
“Fire kills, no matter what age. Unfortunately, college students do not realize how fast a fire can grow and then what to do when a fire occurs,” she said. “Community Living wants to help students understand that fires can happen in campus-related settings and they need to protect themselves no matter where they live, learn or play”
Campus Safety Day will include a hands-on mock residence hall room burn, fire extinguisher training, safety booths and giveaways.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation will also be apart of this event. They will be setting up The Rollover, Simulator, The Convincer and Fatal Vision Goggles. There will be safety booths from many agencies from the city of Columbus and also on campus venues.
Parker added, “The Department of Community Living has had support from every one involved with planning this day. We would like to thank the city of Columbus fire and police departments and the MUW Police Department.”
