Speech-language pathologists specialize in the screening, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of human communication disorders. They work in a variety of professional settings, such as public and private schools, hospitals, universities, nursing homes, other health care facilities, and in private practice. They work with persons of all ages, from infancy to the elderly.

Welcome to the Speech-Language Pathology Program’s Website. Speech-language pathology is an exciting and worthy profession that provides service to communicatively impaired individuals and their families. MUW offers an undergraduate, pre-professional degree and a Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Additionally, the Program operates the Speech and Hearing Center which provides speech, language and hearing services to the public and allows students to learn in a “hands-on” environment. These programs are committed to teaching a future generation of speech-language pathologists and offering exemplary evaluation and therapy services to clients.

Pre-Professional Undergraduate Program

The Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology undergraduate program provides students with a basic understanding of normal and disordered communication in preparation for entrance into graduate school. The undergraduate program in Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology is pre-professional. A student must complete an advanced degree program and meet meet the requirements of credentialing agencies to practice in the professions. A student must complete the university core curriculum plus a statistics course, thirty-nine semester hours of required courses in the professional major, and eighteen to twenty-one hours in a minor area to complete the Bachelor of Science degree.

Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Program

The Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology graduate program enables students to develop professional knowledge and clinical skills. Traditional and non-traditional students will demonstrate leadership, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities professionally and competently in a variety of clinical settings. The graduate program offers a Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology. The program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). A graduate of the program will meet the academic requirements for the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP), licensure from the Mississippi Department of Health, and teacher licensure from the Mississippi Department of Education. Admission to the graduate speech-language pathology program is competitive. Decisions regarding admission are made during the months of March and April. In order to be considered for admission, the candidate must have completed the graduate school application process by March 1 for Fall admission. Requirements for admission to the Graduate School and the Speech-Language Pathology program include: a baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year institution, a satisfactory undergraduate academic record (minimum 3.0 QPA based on a four point scale), GRE scores, three letters of recommendation, and immunization record for measles and rubella.

MUW Speech and Hearing Center

We are located on the beautiful and historic Mississippi University for Women campus at the corner of 9^th Street South and 6^th Avenue South.

The MUW Speech and Hearing Center provides speech, language, and audiology services, within our capabilities, to all ages in the regional area. Services offered include:

• Activities related to the prevention of communicative disorders.
• Activities related to the early identification of communicative disorders.
• Evaluations to identify the existence and parameters of disorders.
• Consultations with clients (or designated other) regarding their communicative disorder.
• Therapy as needed.
• Referrals to other agencies as needed.

A speech, language, or hearing evaluation identifies problem areas in communication. Services are available with a speech-language pathologist for individuals with speech-language problems and with an audiologist for individuals with hearing problems.
