General Emergency Response


In cases of campus-wide emergencies, such as tornadoes, hurricanes, hazardous waste spills, or other widespread dangers, notification of all residence halls may be necessary. The University has an emergency system in place to respond to situations and provide communication to the community as well. It provides a process by which staff members can be contacted and given important information to disseminate to the residence hall community.

In the event of an automobile accident:

  1. Call MUW Police

  2. If medical attention is needed, call 911

In the event of a serious injury/illness:

  1. Call 911

  2. Then call MUW Police to advise ambulance is on the way

In the event of a civil disturbance:

  1. Call 911

  2. Then call MUW Police

In the event of hazardous weather:

  1. Monitor local radio and TV for updates on closings
    WCBI-TV (channel 4)
    WTVA-TV (channel 9)
    WACR FM (103.9)
    WKOR FM (94.9)
    WSMS FM (99.9)
    WMBC FM (103.1)
    WMXU FM (106.1)

  2. In the event of a tornado:
    *The siren on campus will sound
    *Immediately go to an interior room or hall on the lowest level
    *Stay away from glassed areas
    *Safe areas are posted in each building
    *Do NOT go outside until told to so by authorities

In the event of a serious threat (i.e. bomb threat):

  1. Report--call MUW Police
    Ask the caller, where is the bomb located, when is it going to explode, what kind of bomb is it, what does it look like?

  2. Evacuate the building--pull fire alarm and follow evacuation plans

  3. Stay clear--get at least 500 feet away from the building and stay in a safe area.  Stay out of the building until it is declared safe to go back in to the building by authorities

In the event of a fire:

  1. When a fire is discovered, call 911

  2. Then call MUW Police

  3. Evacuate building through posted exit routes

  4. Close all doors to confine fire and reduce oxygen

  5. Do not lock doors

  6. Do not use elevators

  7. Stay clear--at least 500 feet from building

  8. Do not re-enter until told to do so by authorities

  9. Keep fire lanes, walkways, streets and hydrant access clear

In the event of building problems:

  1. If someone is trapped in an elevator, tell them to turn on an emergency alarm and call MUW Police

  2. If there is a plumbing failure or flooding stop using all electrical equipment and report the problem at once to MUW Police and/or an RA on the floor

  3. If there is a gas leak, stop all activities and leave the building immediately.  Do not touch any light switch or any electrical equipment as it could cause an explosion.  Report the problem to MUW Police immediately

  4. To report building problems contact the Physical Plant Monday-Friday 7am-4pm at (662) 329-7396 or MUW Police after hours and on holidays/breaks
